Data Notes

Concise analysis of a statistical measure, a calculation or a comparability problem in economic evidence.

Definitions before interpretation

Data notes concentrate on a measurement question that materially affects an economic conclusion. They identify the relevant accounting relationship, show the calculation and explain the limits of its use.

A numerical example may use assumed values to make the mechanism transparent. Such examples are identified in the text and do not describe an observed economy.

Data Note

Exports valued in different currencies

Export values expressed in renminbi and dollars can grow at different rates even when the underlying shipments are identical. The conversion identity separates currency translation from product prices, quantities and exporters' realized receipts.

Data Note

Aggregate GDP and GDP per person

GDP per person changes with both aggregate output and population. Exact growth arithmetic distinguishes a larger economy from higher average output and identifies why population timing and matching price measures matter.

Retaining the statistical context

Read the unit, price basis, adjustment and reference period with the number. For official observations, the release vintage also matters: a revised series can answer a different historical question from the estimate available at the time.
