Economic structure

Resource exports affect Australian output and income through quantities, prices and ownership. A stronger terms of trade can raise purchasing power even when production changes little. Research distinguishes those income effects from the construction and operation of resource capacity.

Policy and financial setting

Housing and location affect how workers and capital adjust to economic opportunities. Mortgage contract structures influence household exposure to interest-rate changes, while planning, infrastructure and building capacity shape supply. Resource and critical-mineral projects require complementary transport, energy and processing services.

Indicators and interpretation

Research dimension Measure Interpretation
Resource income Export volumes, prices and terms of trade Separate the quantity of output from its purchasing power.
Housing Approvals, completions and dwelling stock Read construction stages with population and household demand.
Household finance Loan repricing and debt-service costs Distinguish refinancing, amortization and changes in new borrowing.

Assessment and research periods

The Reserve Bank of Australia's account of the 2005–2011 terms-of-trade boom separates the initial export-price increase from the subsequent expansion in resource supply. That historical sequence remains useful for reading an export gain: purchasing power, construction demand and shipment volumes can move at different times. Resource exports and income formation follows those channels and the ownership of the resulting income; the accompanying housing study examines the delivery of dwellings relative to household formation.

Economy Study

Housing supply and labor mobility in Australia

Housing construction affects Australian labor mobility through location, delivery, and the cost of living near employment. This study connects productivity and project stages with the household budget that determines whether a move is worthwhile.

Variables to follow

Follow resource-project utilization, the pass-through of income to domestic activity, dwelling delivery and housing costs in expanding labor markets. Support for a mineral project should be assessed with the infrastructure it needs to operate.
