Economic structure

North American sourcing connects Mexican production with imported inputs and final demand across the region. A rise in exports or an investment announcement does not by itself establish an equivalent increase in domestic value added. Research examines supplier relationships, production stages and the capacity required to expand output.

Policy and financial setting

Rules of origin affect eligibility for trade treatment, while electricity access, transport and project authorizations affect the feasibility of production. These conditions operate through different legal and physical channels. Investment decisions must account for both market access and the delivery of reliable inputs.

Indicators and interpretation

Research dimension Measure Interpretation
Production links Manufacturing exports and domestic content Distinguish gross shipments from value added generated locally.
Investment New projects, expenditure and operating capacity Separate announced commitments from construction and production.
Infrastructure Electricity connections and transport service Identify the location, usable capacity and timing of access.

Assessment: value generated within a production network

INEGI’s preliminary 2023 global-manufacturing-export measure separates imported inputs from direct manufacturing value added and domestically sourced intermediates. The production study explains why its reported share cannot be transferred to every exporter or treated as a complete value-added decomposition. The industrial-expansion study examines the electricity and logistics conditions needed to turn investment into output.

From investment announcements to operating capacity

Financial inflows and project announcements do not establish operating capacity. Official reporting from five economies and an original project ledger separate expenditure, acquisitions, construction, commissioning, utilization, and the timing of realized production.

Variables to follow

Assess local supplier participation, power availability, cross-border logistics and the terms under which products qualify for regional treatment. The value of location depends on the production chain and the constraint actually faced.
