Economic structure

The euro area combines a common monetary setting with economies that differ in production, finance and fiscal conditions. An aggregate can conceal divergent movements in household demand, manufacturing and construction. Research distinguishes the area-wide result from the national institutions through which adjustment occurs.

Policy and financial setting

The ECB’s monetary framework operates across the currency area, while fiscal decisions and much project delivery remain national or subnational. Mortgage contracts, bank balance sheets and financing structures influence the timing of transmission. European investment funding adds another institutional layer between an allocation and completed capacity.

Indicators and interpretation

Research dimension Measure Interpretation
Activity Euro-area real GDP and expenditure Use the area aggregate; do not add member-country values to it.
Prices Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices Distinguish the aggregate index, component measures and national weights.
Credit Bank lending conditions and loan flows Survey balances describe reported conditions, not quantities of credit.

Assessment: credit conditions in 2026

The ECB’s July 2026 lending survey reports both a net tightening of enterprise credit standards and a net increase in loan demand in the second quarter. These are balances of survey responses, rather than changes in the amount of lending. The monetary-transmission study examines why a common policy setting can coexist with different financing and debt-service conditions across members.

Explaining productivity differences across the Atlantic

This report separates sector composition, capital intensity, and working time in transatlantic productivity comparisons. Official evidence and a reproducible decomposition show why differences within industries require closer examination before aggregate gaps support policy conclusions.

Policy Brief

European investment funding from allocation to delivery

European recovery funding links payments to milestones and targets rather than a simple total of reimbursed invoices. The brief reconciles allocations, disbursements, national execution, and service delivery, retaining the distinct deadlines and evidence relevant to the RRF's final implementation stage.

Variables to follow

Consider credit standards, loan demand, household debt repricing, investment execution and the composition of national fiscal adjustment. Comparisons with U.S. growth must reconcile annualized and quarter-on-quarter rates.
