Economic structure

Domestic processing changes the location and form of production, but the economic gain depends on costs, imported inputs, ownership and market conditions. Research distinguishes the value of processed exports from the domestic income generated after the resources required for production are considered.

Policy and financial setting

Export restrictions and investment incentives influence firms through the relative returns to different activities. External financing conditions and exchange-rate exposure add another channel through which global developments reach domestic investment. Bank lending also depends on risk, liquidity and the terms of credit.

Indicators and interpretation

Research dimension Measure Interpretation
Processing Output, exports and domestic value added Retain input costs and avoid treating export value as domestic income.
External finance Capital flows, currency and maturity Separate direct investment, portfolio flows and debt liabilities.
Bank lending Loan growth and lending conditions Distinguish demand for funds from banks’ willingness to supply them.

Assessment and research periods

Bank Indonesia's 2024 economic report documented nickel downstream-product exports from the Sulampua region of US$26.0 billion in 2023 and US$20.5 billion during January–October 2024. The observations cover different lengths of time. Domestic processing and value creation examines their regional scope, the imported inputs supporting production and the income retained by residents. The external-finance study separately uses the May 2026 Monetary Policy Review to trace the currencies, maturities and intermediaries through which financing reaches borrowers.

Fiscal room under external financing constraints

Currency composition, repricing, and refinancing determine the payments behind a debt ratio. Four official debt-management records and an original stress calculation explain how revenue volatility and foreign-currency requirements constrain usable fiscal room.

Economy Study

Domestic processing and value creation in Indonesia

Indonesian mineral processing has changed industrial geography, but gross exports overstate the income available to residents. This study examines domestic content, supplier capabilities, public obligations, and the opportunity costs underlying a durable processing gain.

Comparative Study

Two routes to industrial expansion

Infrastructure coordination and resource processing expand industry through different mechanisms. Indian planning evidence and Indonesia’s downstream strategy are compared through complementary inputs, domestic value creation and explicit project accounts rather than export or construction totals alone.

Variables to follow

Follow downstream utilization, domestic supplier links, external funding composition and the distribution of credit. The effect of a processing policy should be assessed against the activity that would otherwise have occurred.
